The history of this property dates back to the times of the Crusades (hence the fleur-de-lys that adorns its coat of arms). In the 18th century, the Scottish navigator Georges Smith settled there. He will be succeeded by Mr. Duffour-Dubergier, Mayor of Bordeaux; Louis Eschenauer, a great figure in the Bordeaux trade and finally Daniel and Florence Cathiard who are the last owners.
They restored the 16th century tower, renovated the 18th century charterhouse, refurbished 2 underground cellars, resumed traditional tillage, removed weedkillers and integrated their own cooperage. The exemplary elegance and ample, structured balance of white and red wines from Smith Haut Lafitte are today unanimously recognized and justify this passion for total quality.
At Château Smith Haut Lafitte, six wines are produced, all from the estate which unfolds in one piece on the Graves Günziennes appellation terroir Pessac-Leognan.
The Smith Haut Lafitte 2019 is made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. These grape varieties come from vines that are around fifty years old.
The wine is aged for 18 months in barrels, 60% of which are new barrels, made at the estate, in its integrated cooperage.
The Smith Haut Lafitte 2019 presents a black dress, of unparalleled density and depth.
On the nose, it is generous, revealing an aromatic palette rich in black and red fruits: blackberries, blackcurrants, cherries and raspberries, embellished with a spicy touch, testimony to the optimal maturity of this vintage.
Gently stirring the wine reveals increased complexity. Subtle floral notes mingle with sweet spices and a hint of smoke, revealing a surprisingly sophisticated bouquet. On the palate, the wine is ample, dense and vigorous, combining concentration and abundant tannins without sacrificing balance, freshness and finesse.
The expression "an iron hand in a velvet glove" could not describe it better! The symbiosis between tannins and freshness is remarkable, and is long in the mouth, attesting to the superb quality of this wine.
