Following various divisions and successions, in 1840, Jeanne de Poyferré, granddaughter of the Marquis, inherited the current estate, which was later named Château de Léoville Poyferré. During the 1855 Médoc wine classification, it was elevated to the rank of Second Grand Cru Classé.
Sold several times, Léoville Poyferré fell in 1920 to a northern family, today represented by Didier Cuvelier, who acquired Château Léoville.
Poyferré (58 hectares), as well as Château Moulin Riche (22 hectares). Under the leadership of its owner and oenologist Michel Rolland, Château Léoville Poyferré has the technical and human resources to rival its cousin. Château Moulin Riche was the second wine of Château Léoville Poyferré. Starting with the 2009 vintage, Château Moulin Riche once again became a cru in its own right, while Pavillon de Poyferré will be the second wine of Châteaux Léoville Poyferré and Moulin Riche.
The modernization of the cellars and the use of a high proportion of new oak for aging the wines, up to 80%, have contributed to the creation of a complex and profound nectar.
Château Léoville Poyferré is a Second Grand Cru Classé and is located in the prestigious Saint-Julien appellation.
To achieve this, the estate cultivated its Cabernet Sauvignon (dominant in the blend), Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc vines on Mindel gravel terraces and a sandy-clay subsoil, which contributes to the fullness and complexity of its wines.
Hence, the harvest is done manually and the grapes are rigorously sorted twice before starting vinification. These are done in stainless steel vats to preserve the purity of the fruit. The wine is then aged in new barrels for 18 to 20 months.
The 2020 Château Léoville Poyferré is a blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot. The 2020 Château Léoville Poyferré has a medium garnet-purple color. On the nose, it reveals luscious aromas of violet, Black Forest grapes, and blueberry jam with floral and earthy notes. Medium-bodied, on the palate, the wine is intense yet tranquil, with a good balance of soft and fine tannins. The finish is long and refreshing. The Château Léoville Poyferré 2020 has excellent aging potential.
The Château Léoville Poyferré 2020 will pair perfectly with foie gras, roast lamb, or beef fillet, as well as any truffle- or porcini-based dishes.
